how does selling products to people have anything to do with art? Well, after a class discussion about "advertising as art" I stepped back and looked at advertising as a whole (the creative AND business side)...and it became pretty clear why advertising is in the arts school. In my opinion (new opinion), *art* is just a means of expressing yourself, whether it be through dance, fashion, music, graphic design, painting,or making funny homemade youtube videos to entertain the public. Advertising is using art or an artistic idea to give a brand a certain personality that will attract a certain group of consumers. I am going to post 5 ads that clearly demonstrate... the art in advertising.
Nationwide insurance is an excellent example of a company that used "artful advertising" when they created this billboard for a fictional paint company, "Coops Paints". This advertisement was created by the agency where I did my summer internship, Temerlin McClain (TM Advertising). The billboard, with Nationwide's tag line "Life comes at you fast", shows a massive bucket of paint spilling and splashing down the side of a building and into a parking lot, covering several cars and destroying everything in it's path. This advertisement defies the stereotype of a the "normal advertisement", just a couple catchy and informative words placed in a magazine, and becomes a piece of artwork. The advertisement literally jumps off the page and uses unbelievable creativity to prove the company's point that everyone should have insurance because life comes at you fast and there are accidents (of all kinds) all the time.
This advertisement for Dettol Instant Hand Sanitizer was created by EURO RSCG Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This artistic advertisement resembles a sculpture of a human hand but instead of just simply showing the normal human hand,EURO RSCG went above and beyond and constructed the hand using a collage of all the germ contracting activities we do in a single day. This ad achieves great effectiveness because it reenforces how dirty and germy our most normal activities can be. If we just used this hand sanitizer more frequently we could eliminate many sicknesses and germs.
This advertisement for KAPITI watches was created by Colenso BBDO in Auckland, New Zealand. This artful advertisement displays the image of a designer watch as if it were a decadent hot fudge sunday melting in your mouth. I would never think to compare a designer watch to a hot fudge sunday but hey, they're both delicious to look at and we kinda feel bad after we purchase one of them (but only for a split second, of course). For some reason this advertisement reminds me of one of Salvador Dali's paintings with the melting clocks. If Salvador Dali's melting clock painting is considered "art", then so can this advertisement of a melting watch.
This Absolut Vodka advertisement, created by TBWA, encompasses Keith Haring's unique chalk-drawing idea. Keith Haring was an artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s. He first achieved his first public attention with chalk drawings in the subways of New York City and now he's present in this ad for Absolut Vodka. If Keith Haring's chalk drawings are considered art, why couldn't this advertisement be?
I absolutely love this print ad for Absolut Vodka's "IN AN ABSOLUT WORLD" campaign (created by TBWA). This ad reminds me of a poster that a college girl would hang on her dorm room wall as art. In an absolute world a woman could simply order a "build your perfect man kit"and assemble him with all of the essential parts to be a perfect catch. This advertisement is completely artful because it shows a woman expressing a feeling that almost even women feels at least once in her life (the perfect guy doesn't exist in the normal world) in a unique and visual way.
